Mulan and The Business World

A Unique Perspective on A Disney Movie and the Business World


For many thousands of years many people looking to gain a competitive edge have read and studied the Art of War. Some very seemly simple, yet and often forgotten, tacts to gaining the winning competative edge. I recently took another family vacation to Walt Disney World, and while I was there I listened to the song from movie Mulan called “Be A Man.” This song has some very striking, but possibility subtle to the untrained ear lyrics.

"Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within."

We are constantly working on our own personal brand, the person and image we want to consciously project onto others. My personal goal is to not show dismay, anger, or stress outwardly though my body language. Especially in such a way that creates chaos, turmoil, and uncertainiy in my leadership style for my team - “tranquil as a forest, but a fire within.” My tranquility is a show of strength and courage in the face of possible ambiguity, and the burning passion for life inside of me. The constant and ever present yearning for achievement.

Then my goals is to create a team that  as a whole moves fluidly through change together, with a strong understanding of the common purpose that we all serve. “We must be swift as a coursing rain, with all the force of a great typhoon, with all the strength of a raging fire, mysterious as a dark side of the moon.”

“You’re not suited for the rage of war; so pack up, go home, you’re through.”

Then occasionally we come across someone who is not a good job fit for the position they are in. Remember, we are comparing how we handle work situations to the Art of War - “You’re not suited for the rage of war; pack up, go home, you’re through.” When we meet this person who cannot function successfully in their position or with the team, for the common success of the team then it is time to remove that person from the position or the team.  There may be a multitude of reasons why this person does not work in the situations that they are in, but the fact of the matter is, the individual is not suited for the position they currently find themselves. Their lack of ability, want, desire, knowlegde, ect will have a detrimental impact on the team.
Just keep this information in the back of your mind... Especially when you're creating a team.
